Education is key to changing the life of the poorest children in India, and the catalyst for positive social change. The Batemans Trust is a successful UK charity working with its partner, the Satkaarya Trust in India, to deliver education, secure accommodation and welfare to disadvantaged children in Chennai, India. Since 1998 The Batemans Trust has strived to give every child in its care the attention they need to be the best they can be – creating a community of emotionally and financially independent individuals equipped for a life in modern India. This has been funded by donations and sponsors from the UK, India and elsewhere.
Batemans began in 1998 by helping the Anglo-Indian children at St George’s Boarding Home for Orphans when it was facing closure. After significantly improving conditions and ensuring a future for the school, the trust expanded its remit to help many more disadvantaged children in and around Chennai.
Today we support dozens of children from the most deprived backgrounds through our Open School, hostels and continued support of children at local schools. We have FCRA approval and a close working relationship with the Child Welfare Office in Chennai.
Exciting plans
After years of planning and fundraising, the Batemans Trust has bought a piece of land to develop our own primary school and boarding home in Chennai.
This major project forms the key part of Batemans’ strategic plan, which revolves around ensuring the charity can continue to effectively meet the needs of deprived young people in and around Chennai.
